Here goes the exhibition which i had visited during my Taiwan photography trip last December, an exhibition that brought back many happy childhood memories - The 100 years before the birth of Doraemon Exhibition 哆啦A梦诞生前 100 年特展, 忆起了许多童年的怀旧. A lot of people in Asia including Taiwan grew up with Doraemon. The Taipei exhibit showcases a hundred life-sized Doraemons, each carrying a different fanciful gadget. This robotic cat is a masterpiece by cartoonist Fujiko F. Fujio and, to generations of Taiwanese people, a good-natured friend whose 4-dimensional pocket promises them timely help, wonderful dreams and a bright future. Sent back in time from the 22nd century, Doraemon has an endless supply of futuristic toys in his arsenal. When his friend Nobi is in trouble, he whips out a gadget from his 4D pocket to help them solve their problems. That's the most charming aspect of the cartoon series. The time-travelling robot cat, every child's best friend, has a huge fan base especially in Asia. He was said to be born in September 3, 2112 - 100 years from now. This year, 2013, marks Doraemon’s 100th pre-birth year. If you are a big fan of Doraemon and has always wanted to meet him, it's time for you to realize your dream. The "100 Years before the Birth of Doraemon" exhibit runs until 7th April 2013 at the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park. Doraemon is a robot cat from the future. From his pocket, “fourth-dimensional pocket,” Doraemon produces mind-blowing gadgets from the future. These most famous ones being “bamboo-copter” (the gadget lets you fly in the air), “Anywhere Door” (the door connects you to anywhere you want to go) and the “Time Machine” (the machine takes you back and forward in time). Doraemon is a Japanese comic series about an extremely intelligent robotic cat (Doraemon) from the future, that travels back into time to help a rather miserable, often bullied young boy named Nobi. Doraemon owns a magical pocket, which allows him to conjure up thousands of different gadgets, tools and potions. Most of these special tools are used to help get Nobi out of his sticky situations that arise in his daily life. What I found most exciting was discovering that Doraemon wasn’t supposed to be blue at all! Although I would have enjoyed seeing more of Fujio’s manuscripts, the exhibition offered great photo-ops. Items special to the Taipei exhibit are rare drafts of the original comic strip, plus never-before-seen theme installations like one called "Doraemon's Birth." Find out what Doraemon looked like before a robot mouse bit off his ears, turning his paint to a shade of depressive blue. An exhibition showcasing 100 life-sized figures of popular Japanese cartoon character Doraemon will kick off in end December at Taipei to give visitors a taste of the blue, robotic cat's fantasy world. The tall Doraemon figures, each holding a different tool and gadget, will feature prominently along with manuscripts of the comic book and anime series and street scenes and props from the series. One hundred Doraemon models, each paired with a gadget from the future, are available for pictures. For example, the bread (image below, right) is called “Memory Bread.” You can write on the bread anything you want to remember, e.g. exam notes, to-do-lists etc. Then, after you’ve eaten the bread, you will remember everything that’s on it. The gallery offers a boutique cafe that serves up Doraemon's favourite snack dorayaki - tiny pancakes with red bean paste and memory bread, a gadget that lets Nobita remember anything if he copies it on to the toast and eats it. Who is your favorite character in Doraemon? Which part of the stories or which gadget impressed you the most? It’s not at all surprising that after almost 45 years of the original publication date, this character and story remains as popular as ever. The stories that Nobi runs into - the bullying, being a lazy bum, getting bad grades, wanting to have fun and all the other daily life problems that he encounters are things that people can easily relate to. He comes home to Doraemon crying for help each time because he wants to solve his problems through the quickest and easiest solutions available. Doraemon usually denies offering help in the beginning but always caves in to his request because he is the nicest cat ever. Predictably, even with the assistance of magical tools, Nobi’s problems often causes him to end up in a deeper trouble due to his greed and idiocy. The point that author, Fujiko F. Fujio, is driving home seems pretty clear and that is there aren’t any shortcuts or quick fixes in life.
Many people read the comic manga because they get pleasure out of the moral lessons the author is trying to get across. The greatest reason why Doraemon remains dear to me is the imaginative world and characters that the author had created and the impact it had on my imagination since as a child. There is nothing quite as satisfying as daydreaming about time travel and how awesome your life would be if only Doraemon was it in. :-)
