There’s something about Hong Kong – its sights, smells and most of all the buzz and energy in the air – that keeps drawing me back in. And no matter how many times i return, there’s always something new to discover. Nestled on the Temple Street stretch, the Mido Cafe in Hong Kong has been around since the 50′s. This was a time when Hong Kong was flourishing. Financially, many locals were enjoying decent cash flow so were looking to experience ‘Western’ culinary fare. ’Cha Chan Teng’ (the translation is literally – tea restaurant) were created to fill this void and the Mido Cafe is arguably the oldest of its kind. Its classic and tasty Hong Kong style fast-food, its unique and traditional interior and exterior design and its location in the old-fashion-styled Temple Street, are all the reasons why it has always been so popular among local people. The Mido Cafe is a institution which is a blast from Hong Kong’s historical past. Many Hong Kong cafes are becoming a part of history. Before Mido would ever disappear, just go to experience this ‘time machine’. Here's a tip for patrons, try to aim for the corner booth. That’s the ‘Hong Kong celeb’ corner. Hong Kong directors actors like to hang out at the old and nostalgic Mido Cafe. Incepted in 1952, Mido Cafe is one of the few traditional ‘Bing Sutts’ – Hong Kong-style cafes of the old days during the 1950s–70s, still in business to date, located along Temple Street, the building where it is situated is one of the few low-storey structures in Mong Kok. ‘Bing Sutts’ are also well-known as a micro-community where people got connected to one another in times past. Mido Cafe is no exception, even until now. The first floor is a nice place to have Hong Kong style fast-food, as there is a long window where you can see the Temple Street Market while eating. Unlike the ground floor, the first floor is air-conditioned in the summer and the seats are more comfortable. Proletarian clientele vie for shabby seats at shared tables as ceiling fans whire and an ancient wall clock keeps time, rather pointlessly, given that it's forever 1950 at the Mido Cafe. What Mido Cafe does offer is a tasty and unmediated slice of Old Hong Kong. The city's culinary and cultural authenticity are potently concentrated in a few surviving places like this. Step into Mido Cafe and you will see vestiges of yore – white tiled floor, plain beige walls, rusted steel windows, wooden tables (seven of which are part of the signature red teak-wood booths lined alongside opposite walls), old ceiling fans (some already in disrepair) and so forth. By and large, the decor emanates a wave of nostalgia. More of a living museum rather than a place to grab coffee, Mido Cafe is decorated with small tiles on the floors and walls, a feature which was typical of that old era. The 2nd floor is particularly atmospheric because of the hard bench seating, big windows, high ceilings and neon light filtering in from the sign just outside. It’s not a coincidence that so many movies and photoshoots were inspired by this place. The Mido Cafe is the kind of place you are quite likely to see a local film director frequenting. Someone with a sense of nostalgia who possibly remembers a simpler time, or at least yearns for it. It’s the type of place that looks like a still from a quintessential Hong Kong movie, so don’t miss the opportunity to experience its old world charm when you are in Mong Kok district of Hong Kong. With such a unique atmosphere, a trip to Mido Cafe is better than experiencing Hong Kong history in a museum setting. This place is the real deal!
