This blog post is for a Big Welcome to a selected group of people who place a great importance of music in their everyday lives with vinyl records being the preferred medium!! Vinyl LP (Long Play) caters to a very specific group that favours real analogue sound over "digital music". But in today’s age of digital file formats, and at a time when CD sales are spiraling toward a fantastic and fiery demise, vinyl records remain in demand by many musicians and hard-to-please music aficionados. Some vintage vinyl stores in Singapore do sell new albums in LP format if you're still interested. They focus either on "audiophile" jazz albums or DJ albums used for club mixes. Some stores have records on sale, both used and new. You can find audiophile jazz LPs, used pop / rock etc records from cheap to rare. Those stores still offers that huge collection of coveted, white-label records, as well as rare and deleted collector’s edition of Teresa Teng, Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui - all available on their racks. The equally legendary New Disc Village (#02-15 The Adelphi) brings in exclusive seven-inch records, most of which have already ceased to be in production. Serious collectors should also square in on Simply Music (#03-12 The Adelphi), Roxy Disc House (#03-42 The Adelphi), Vinylucky (#B1-42 The Adelphi) and Chinatown Complex (#01-133 Block 335 Smith Street) for more rare and limited edition CDs and vinyls. This small shop at Chinatown Complex (Level 1 Unit 01-176, Block 335 Smith Street) is run by a former antique dealer. The store is packed with more than 4,000 records, including an abundance of Chinese-dialect pop and Melayu from Indonesia. The highlight of this place is the formidable pile of records of mostly mid-century Chinese pop, classical and opera, including some exceedingly rare recordings from pre-Communist China. ROXY DISC HOUSE (#03-42 The Adelphi) is run by a pair of brothers, who have sold everything from used vinyl to import CDs. Patrons to the shop will keep their eyes peeled for vinyl re-issues of seldom seen jazz classics. The many boxes of local pop albums crammed in a corner is one of the largest caches in Singapore. It is one of the best places in town to buy audiophile CDs and records. The owner of this vintage vinyl store - SIMPLY MUSIC (#03-12 The Adelphi) started out this shop a decade ago, when his own collection got too big to keep at home. The store concentrates on providing exclusive on new Japanese pressings, plus small selection of second hand. There are also many high-quality vintage vinyl in the shop, including albums by 1960s English-language local pop bands like The Quests. The store also keeps a golden assortment of bebop records, both original and re-issue, is supplemented by a choice selection of 1980s Canto-pop albums, most in pristine condition. NEW DISC VILLAGE (#03-15 The Adelphi) New Disc Village is one other place to have a comprehensive range of new releases and re-issues Classic Records, Speakers' Corner and Analogue Productions. The shop was closed when i dropped by for a shoot, hence i was unable to snap more of its interior look of this vintage vinyl shop. Since as a young child, the intrigue I found in exploring these old records could not have been fueled by a subconscious desire to compliment my own working knowledge of musicology. But, despite listening to the records in ignorance of their historical context and blind to any kind of vintage ambiance that may have been attributed to them, I was captivated by a more tangible experience. Their covers were full of big images and artwork that was different than anything I had seen before. They had a distinct smell – a cross between newspapers and furniture. And, I would later learn, they had their own distinct sound – one that was regarded by many as playing an integral role in the music that was recorded with vinyl specifically in mind.
Today, we have likely witnessed the death of all physical media. While digital technology will surely spawn new advancements in its own right, the age of packaging as an essential function in delivering music to listeners has come to an abrupt end. But, somehow, the vinyl record has earned the right to stay with us. And in the face of our unsympathetic media culture’s fleeting strides toward technological perfection, the vinyl record continues to be appreciated by listeners and lives on as a tool in our tireless exploration of sound. A big Thank You to all who had spent time and help to support the vinyl format in accordance with the respect and recognition that it duly deserves given its rarity these days.
