The old Shek Kip Mei neighbourhood may not be an obvious tourist hotspot in Hong Kong but the eclectic Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre (JCCAC) building alone warrants it a visit. The former 9-storey factory estate was built in 1970s. It has been successfully transformed into a community arts centre and turned the building into studio for artists and designers to pursue their creative work. It made a good use of the decommissioned factory building as an arts and cultural hub for the community. In addition to studio space for artists and art groups, the Centre features a black-box theatre, art galleries and communal studios/workshops for resident artists and the community to use. The inauguration of JCCAC surely is a good start to nurture the local upcoming artists and to introduce arts to the public; it is also a milestone of developing the art and design industry in Hong Kong. I give it a 5/5 because I think this place deserves to be more visited, especially if you're into art. It's a building full of little ateliers / exhibition spaces for local artists. I found it very interesting to see the corridors, as there were interesting art pieces here and there. As manufacturing industries have moved their operations to the mainland over the years, many of Hong Kong's old factory buildings have been left empty. But one was given a new lease of life as a centre for artists and craftspeople from a wide range of disciplines. The JCCAC represents a milestone in the development of the local creative industries. It is the first attempt in Hong Kong to convert a decommissioned factory building into a creative arts centre, providing an enabling environment to draw together creative and cultural enterprises for the nurturing of creative talents. As the belief in the valuable heritage of Hong Kong society should be developing along with the new art industry, the craftsmanship of the local tradition is as important as the new generation of up-and-coming artists, so the JCCAC always invites the craftspeople of the local tradition to take part in their workshops and encourages new talents to collaborate with them. The results of young and old creativities putting together are full of surprises and they reveal amalgamation of contemporary arts and Hong Kong cultures.
JCCAC is a must-visit if you want to look at the ‘cottage’ arts industry, mainly in visual arts like photography, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking and glass, but also in performing arts and applied arts. I really wish they can advertise this place more often as it's a culturally important building in a culturally important district !
