Part 2/2: In Search of Old Antiques / Treasures in Hong Kong
Here goes the Part 2 of 2-series blog posts on "In Search of Old Antiques / Treasures in Hong Kong Sheung Wan District" 在香港上环寻古董宝藏地, 凝练时光 - Hollywood Road Antique Street 荷李活道古董街.
There are two main streets in Hong Kong Sheung Wan District where you can find a concentration of antique and furniture shops as well as curio markets: Hollywood Road (a.k.a Antique Street) and Upper Lascar Row (a.k.a Cat Street).
Antique lovers have been flocking to China for many years. The country’s rich and diverse history has enabled it to produce spectacular examples of furniture, garments and porcelain that are renowned the world over. Of the many major antique hubs in the key cities such as Shanghai and Beijing, Hong Kong arises as one of the most popular and easily accessible by locals and international antique collectors and dealers. People the world over know that China is the place to go to find truly stunning antiques. Because China is a country with a long and intensely interesting past, there is really no end to the variety of gorgeous and truly ancient items of porcelain, furnishings and authentic clothing that can be found there.
Hollywood Road, also known as Antique Street, is lined with antique shops offering a colorful array of paintings, pottery, furniture, that may or may not be the real thing. You are likely to find many reproductions and if looking for genuine pieces, you should probably stick to reputable shops and the antique auctions. That being said, this is a fun street to stroll and have a look and even pick up a few pieces. Bringing the items home is of no problem as all the shops are used to packing the items for travelers and/or shipping overseas.
Hollywood Road was the second road to be built in the newly established colony of Hong Kong back then. Despite its namesake, the road has no relation to the Californian movie capital. In fact, the road is actually named after the Holly trees that used to adorn the surrounding area.
The stretch of Hollywood Road is home to the heart of the antiques industry in Hong Kong. Visitors exploring the road will feel as if they have stepped into a giant walk-in street museum housing various artefacts both ancient and modern.
One of the largest shops at Hollywood Antique Street is Yue Po Chai. Its narrow aisles are bursting with inexpensive jade and trinkets alongside authentic Ming Dynasty porcelain and Chinese brush paintings. Neighboring shops showcase everything from ancient terracotta to lacquered furniture and antique weaponry. It is easy to get swept up amidst such enticing wares.
Today, Hollywood Road Hong Kong is filled with fascinating shops and galleries offering extremely valuable and unusual antiques at high prices, as well as enjoyable and moderately priced collectibles from the Mao era. Antique lovers visiting Hollywood Road will be delighted by the generous and varied selection of Chinese antiques of every kind.
The shops on Hollywood Road carry more upscale and unique quality pieces, whereas the ones at Upper Lascar Road (Cat Street) carry more of the mass-produced, inexpensive merchandise and Chinese handicrafts which are great for gifts and souvenirs.
Lining the street are galleries and shops catering from high end rare antiques to more modern Maoist collectibles. Visitors will find items such as traditional Chinese furniture, rattan, porcelain and Buddha sculptures.
When looking to purchase goods from these antique stores, visitors should know that bargaining is a common practice. The prices displayed may sometimes far exceed the value of the item in an attempt to promote bargaining. It’s important for visitors to Hollywood Road Hong Kong to remember that items are not priced to sell. Instead, they are priced to barter and lively bargaining is expected. When you shop for antiques along this road, you can really feel you have accomplished something when you make your way back to your digs with your treasures at the end of the day!
Hollywood Road in Hong Kong is densely packed with classy antique shops as well as some trendy restaurants and watering holes. But keep walking and the street winds its way to a noticeably more languid, unpretentious atmosphere. Well, i must say that this is Sheung Wan, an intriguing neighborhood of contrasts where one can pleasurably take in the diversity of Hong Kong. I find myself drawn to it from time to time each time i visit Hong Kong, if only just to appreciate the wide variety of items on display here, often in very attractive surroundings.
