As a photographer, i am responsible for telling the story of a moment or series of events in a single image. It allows the viewer to take a mental trip through my photographs. No matter what my focus is in photography, being able to convey a story will help add impact to my images. What truly makes a great news-telling image is the ability to convey a story through noticing even the tiniest details. I accept that people actually have a story to tell – it's my job to capture it and not invent it for them. The story may be painful but capture it anyway – So if my gut tells me to take the shot, i'll just take it. In my experience, the best emotional shots are usually the ones not overly orchestrated. The best images will always be the ones that evoke emotion and make people feel something. I have recently completed a series of photographs that pays a tribute to the life and work of an old single man in his 60s as a gatekeeper at a Singapore Dialect Clan Association for more than 30 years. Entering his 'HOME' of more than 30 over years.

One of my sunrise photos is currently on exhibit at CAT SOCRATES 苏格拉底猫 located at Bras Basah Complex. Hidden within a monolithic complex, the whimsical CAT SOCRATES is an indie bookstore cafe crammed with knick-knacks and novelty items, from pretty sketchbooks to nostalgic tin toys, all sourced by a Shanghainese couple during their trips in Asia. The cafe is bohemian hangout and a great place to linger over a cappuccino. This shop recently organised an exhibition inspired by a book titled "The sky i wish to share with you 好想和妳分享的天空" by author 陈海晗 a.k.a Han. The exhibition theme is to share with people the scene of the sky that made you feel something. I emailed to CAT SOCRATES with this sunrise shot with a description : Watching sunrise is a new beginning, a new hope in life. Shortlisted 'Sky to be shared' photographs are currently on exhibition until the end of May 2011. Location of CAT SOCRATES 苏格拉底猫 Bookstore Cafe: Bras Basah Complex #03-39B Exhibition Timing: 12 noon - 8 pm (Daily) 1 pm - 7 pm (Sunday & Public Holiday) Just a brief intro on this book - The Sky I Wish to Share With You 好想和妳分享的天空 is actually a collection of artwork in the form of a series of postcards, several installations and a short film resulting from Han's unrequited longing. Scenes of encounters shot by the artist, sometimes accompanied with notes, served as a way to share moments. As interplays of real and simulated sites conjure up familiar cinematic states, this project begins his response to the speed of contemporary society, a mediation of his need for nostalgic emotional experiences.

Alternatively, you may click onto the below URL to browse my photos in the past exhibitions at Cat Socrates: http://jennifer-teo.weebly.com/1/category/photography%20exhibition/1.html Cycling has not been a small part of my life, although I don't cycle very often. Cycling helps to de-stress and at the same time, allows me to enjoy nature, discover new places, get some sunshine and exercise at the same time. Outdoor cycling is one of the most intense forms of cardio around. Cycling is a great way to enjoy the great outdoors while adding a huge helping of variety to your standard stationary bike habit. Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of a bike ride. The start was slightly shaky for me today. Ivy called it problem with low speed balance. It took some courage to overcome that initial fear, but once that was broken, everything else after that was much easier. Keeping relaxed was another thing too. By mid-way, I was enjoying myself. The scenery was good and I caught a few planes taking off and landing at the runway. In any case, practice makes perfect. After cycling and dinner at East Coast Park, we went to this Tin Tine located at Pahang Street (in Kampong Glam area, near Jalan Sultan) to have some chill-out drinks. This Tintine is a newcomer to quaint Pahang Street, a bold new concept by the hitherto Indian-centric Herbs & Spices Group. Tintine aims to build on the solid foundation that Herbs & Spices has laid with their upmarket Indian food joints by introducing elements of Italian cuisine into their successful concept. They also have an extensive wine list, which provides very good value for money.
Me & Ivy arranged to cycle a total of about 18 kilometres yesterday late afternoon (5pm) at East Coast Park but this excluded some additional scenic exploration detours along the way. I’m pretty pleased because I haven’t properly cycled in aeons. Additionally, i did not really realised that I could last all the way – usually my heart goes bonkers after a while – but it held out! :-) Invigorating, it was. The sky was a clear blue and i witnessed a pretty awesome sunset at the park. Should definitely do cycling more often. And i’ll arm myself with my camera, of course. :-) I love looking at the vast expanse of water. There is a sort of calming effect, just looking out at something so blue and unblocked. Since we were cycling at our own leisure time, i stopped at any scenic spot at my own will to take photos, admire the view and enjoy the breeze. One thing about the seabreeze in Singapore is that it leaves you feeling all sticky afterwards. But at least it cools me down anyhow. I’d prefer nice, fresh but no doubt sticky seabreeze than suffocating in still air. We stopped for awhile at the Bedok Jetty area (see picture above) and finally before riding back towards the west-end of East Coast Park to return the bike and head for dinner cum chill-out drinks session. Even if one choose not to do much at East Coast Park, you can just sit next to the beach for hours day in and out, looking at the majestic array of moving ships & boats and landing aeroplanes, it gets particularly nice after sunset. I love the silhouette effect and subject of these sunset pictures !
