The Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery was one of my unique experiences in Hong Kong and it is a great addition to any Hong Kong itinerary. As the name suggests, the monastery is filled to the brim with thousands of golden Buddha statues which awed me and they accompanied me up the steep hill to the monastery. Everyone has to climb more than 430 steps and it takes at least 20 to 30 minutes to reach the monastery at the top of the hill. I loved the calm, tranquil atmosphere of this sacred place. Part of the charm of the monastery is its setting. Surrounded by lush, green forest, the monastery is a bit out of the way in the suburbs of Hong Kong. But this just adds to its charm. There were only a few visitors when I visited. I took my time and wandered slowly around the monastery grounds surrounded by golden Buddha statues and the peace and harmony that they represent. The monastery was first built in 1951 under a Buddhist monk named Yuet Kai, and completed six years later. The Buddhas, however, took an additional 10 years to complete. The Venerable Yuet Kai was a well-educated Chinese monk who came to Hong Kong in 1933. Yuet Kai passed away in 1965 and his body was embalmed and covered in gold leaf. The corpse is now exhibited in the main hall of the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery. The main journey up to the monastery is an attraction itself. Each visitor has to follow a steep path to the top of Po Fook hill. There are golden Buddha statues on both sides of the pathway and each statue has an unique facial expression. Enlightened beings from all walks of life make up the long chain of Buddhas along the stairs. There are old, learned monks, monks reading, young fit monks performing martial arts, and many, many more. All are in different poses doing different activities, with different facial expressions. To me, they represent an enlightened version of each of us, people from all walks of life, with all of our differences and similarities. Once you reach the site gorgeous views are everywhere to be found—lush greenery in one direction, and the glimmering silver of a mass metropolis in the other. No monks actually live at the Monastery of Ten Thousand Buddhas, so it’s a monastery without monks. But it is a place of worship that is used by the local community. There are 5 temples, 4 pavilions and thousands of golden statues of the Buddha on the monastery grounds. There is a large hall and a courtyard at the top of the hill to enjoy panoramic views over Sha Tin. Inside the hall is where you’ll find more than 12,000 golden Buddha statues and some of them are from the Tang Dynasty. It is truly an amazing sight to see. I took my shoes off and went inside to have a look around. They ask for you to not take any photos inside the hall hence why I did not take any – you will have to see it for yourself. Also inside the hall, visitors can see what is claimed to be the preserved body of Yuet Kai (who founded the monastery), a figure covered in gold leaves in a lotus pond. The Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery is a real hidden gem in Hong Kong and retains a unique and authentic atmosphere. I highly recommend a visit but one thing to note is that after you alight from Sha Tin MTR Station, there are no signs for the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery, so you have to know the directions where to go and how to get there before you go is vital. After Exit B from Sha Tin Station, turn left and make your way down the ramp towards the street. Be sure to wear a comfortable pair of shoes!
