When Georgetown received its UNESCO listing in 2008, this reignited the world's interest in the tropical island of Penang and its diverse cultural heritage. While the capital's historic shophouses and colonial architecture remain timeless attractions, increased tourism is changing Georgetown, as appreciation of the old encourages investment in the new. Penangites love to eat, drink and talk, and Penang is regarded as the street food capital of Malaysia. Unsurprisingly, many new ventures have revolved around increasingly sophisticated venues for chatting and snacking. Some of these cafes in the heart of Georgetown will be 'unveiled' in my upcoming subsequent blog posts. I will introduce two cafes first for the start in this blog post and they are Kantan Cafe and Love & Latte Cafe. Interior design plays a big role in getting customers for cafes along with the good food and great service and because these days the competition does almost everything to get a piece of patrons, cafe owners have to try and be better than them. Being creative with the dining environment is a good solution for doing that, as people want to eat in a pleasant atmosphere that transmits them that recreational feeling. Also, a unique interior design will differentiate one from the ordinary restaurants or coffee shops on the market and print the brand in their customers’ minds. When i first laid eyes on the super cute The Kantan Cafe in Georgetown, i was instantly taken by the undertones of the warm inviting the space. Love the simple and nice interior design of the cafe. Fully air-conditioned. Love how they retain all the old traditional stuff about the building, and added some modern touch that does not take away the ‘ancient’ beauty of the place. The two-storey building has an ornate terrace façade but inside is simple and cosy, with features of the word 'hello' interpreted in different languages. The layout in this cafe goes against the good old rule ‘less is more’. It was a risky choice but one that has paid off. While on a vacation to Penang resulted in me falling in love with the quaint little baristas littered around the country side offering gourmet coffee, espressos, cafe lattes and cappuccinos that were truly an ecstasy for coffee lovers. These small crowded baristas, the energy radiating from the place, that feeling of romance was how i landed up at Love & Latte Cafe. Love & Latte Cafe creates a place for you to enjoy a fragrant cuppa and nibble their homemade baked cakes and relaxing your mind and releasing ion charges at the same time. The cafe focuses heavily on specialty coffee preparation and adds to the coffee culture by serving drinks prepared with care and uniquely marked with coffee etches of artistic flair. Love & Latte Cafe has tried to bring this romance to the Georgetown keeping into mind a cozy place that serves gourmet coffee and espresso drinks. Step into the Love & Latte cafe and you will be greeted by the resplendent and colorful chairs, the air-conditioned cafe has a cozy ambiance that seems to be the perfect location for you to unwind during weekends. If you are in the vicinity and in need of a good place to wind down, this is also a pleasant place to enjoy a cup of coffee and to rest your feet. From the artistic interior accompanied with soft rock music, i find these two cafes a good spot to spend a lazy afternoon and leaving me a big smile. I believe cafes in Georgetown will continue to flourish but as the novelty of concept cafes dies down, the most successful ones will be those who serve really great coffee and food at sensible prices in a highly comfortable space with some character.
