This little eatery, stocked with real-live cats for kitty lovers to play with – is Penang’s very own cat café - Purrfect Cat Café The place had opened in January last year and the inspiration for this novel idea of having cats for customers to play with, had initially come from the many cat cafes springing up in Japan. As any cat lover knows, playing with cats can be both fun and therapeutic. These cafes generally take in shelter cats and give them a home in the cafe. They have toys and cubbies galore and the humans who love them can buy a cup of coffee and spend a few minutes or hours with the cats. The food and drinks are sold in a separate part of the cafe where cats are not allowed. The ultimate goal is that patrons will adopt the cats and provide them loving, permanent homes. There’s no denying it, Muntri Street in George Town, Penang is becoming very hip what with beautifully restored old Chinese shophouses that are now boutique hotels, bars, eateries or a museum (or two). With the addition of Purrfect Cat Café to that line up boosted the street’s popularity even further, especially with the trendy, furball-loving, tech-savvy 20-somethings. And curiosity, luckily in this instance, did not kill the many who come to pat-pat, coo and simply enjoy being in the presence of cats currently in residence here. Here’s how this café works. It’s a two-storey building and the ground floor is a retail store selling, you guessed it, all things cat-related but for humans. So, you’ve got tees, bags, greeting cards, luggage tags, mugs and the like available here. My pictures show what life is like inside Penang's cat cafe, which offers stressed out city folk a unique way to unwind with a cup of tea and a chance to spend time with some chilled-out moggies. When you first enter the café, you will be greeted by cat-themed merchandise. These range from smaller items such as mobile phone cases and bags, to adorable looking cushions and plush toys. All things are guaranteed uber cuteness. From it chairs, pillows, the counter serving the drinks and desserts and most especially the figurine displays. The second storey is well-lighted, bright in white. No funny smell, the place is kept clean. It is also advised to sanitize your hands and take off shoes before you go to its second floor. The next door which is a sliding one is where the furries are located. On the second floor is where the fun begins. However, you’ll be briefed on ‘house rules’ before slipping off your shoes and heading on upstairs. There are around nine to follow (nine lives, get it?) and they’re there to ensure the well-being of the cats. Part of it is, like in a zoo, feeding cats any sort of food is a strict no-no and leaving a sleeping cat be is well advised – seriously, you wouldn’t like it if someone disturbs your nap, right? So, same rule applies. At Purrfect Cat Café, lounge sofas, chairs and tables are scattered throughout the café, emanating a casual and relaxed vibe. The crowd that comes in here is generally quite young, with students, couples and groups of friends in their 20s forming the main clientèle. Colourful kitty artwork, posters and photographs can be seen dangling from the ceilings and hanging on walls. The upstairs is divided into two. One is a cat zone where you’re free to interact with the cats. The other zone is the café area that’s (living) cat-free but where cat paraphernalia is aplenty. A cat lies on a mat in the Cat Emporium, where stressed-out city-dwellers are lapping up the opportunity to spend time with cats, even for just a couple of hours. You will find the kitties snoozing on shelves, in their beds and cushioned baskets, or just roaming about like they are the kings of the café (and they are). If you are lucky, you may even have one cosy up right next to you! As for the menu, fun kitty-shaped desserts and cookies are available to complete the whole feline experience. Prices here are generally affordable and reasonable. The cats manage to drag in their fair share of felinophiles the rest of the day, keeping business purring along. Kitty cafes are proving the purr-fect way to unwind. Cat cafes offer a place to chill out with a drink and maybe read a book – with a resident feline on your lap. And you might be able to adopt one that you feel a connection with. Even though cat cafes have been around since the late 1990s in Japan and Taiwan, it’s only recently that hangouts with felines have been springing up across the world. And it’s no wonder – cats are thought to provide soothing company for stressed out humans, especially those who may not be able to have one at home.
