I started painting for relaxation a few years ago and in the recent months I found that I most liked painting hats. I love colors, and I love seeing what's going to come out on the canvas. These paintings were done with acrylic paint on 16” x 18” canvases. Each brings a different level of emotion to the painting. None of them look the same except for one pair of paintings (you'll know what I mean when you browse the collection). It's like they take on their own personality, and I begin to outline and sketch. It seems like the colors come to me and it's like dancing on the canvas.
As a kid, i was always fascinated over hats. Ladies in England and Wales wear hats of all kinds, colours, and styles. And it seemed always one of the ladies would try to outdo the others by wearing the biggest hat at a fashion event or in an congregation. I was always enthralled by the sight of women wearing over-the-top, colorful and sometimes sequined hats. Hats have always been a complementary part of a woman's attire. It's just a very beautiful, colorful expression of one's self. Real-life people and movie scences would inspire the majority of my featured works as well.
If you’ve seen the movie "Titanic", you’ve seen the beautiful hats of the time. They had the wide brim and were large and covered the face. One of the hats I loved in the movie had a touch of lace stitched lightly over the crown as though the lace was blown by the wind onto the hat. Kate Winslet was stunning in her navy straw as she reluctantly embarked on her bittersweet fateful journey.
Britain is a nation of hat wearers, of that there is no doubt. Traditionally hats are a very loaded item and have almost totemic power in their ability to signify class, gender, occupation and a myriad of other stations. Even the protocol has symbolic value; from doffing your hat to launching mortar boards in the air, hats have long been associated with rituals and practices stretching back into the mists of time.
Etiquette and formality have always played a part in hat wearing. At the turn of the 20th century, ladies would not consider venturing out without a hat and gloves, and would often change their hats several times a day. According to royal protocol, women must wear hats to all official occasions. Hats are part of the "social fabric" of special occasions in British society. For the women of the royal family and members of the public alike, no formal look is complete without a hat to top it off. the royal family is often responsible for preserving traditions that have faded out of style in every other context, like curtsying, to set them apart from everyone else.
I was also inspired by the hats in another movie "Pretty Woman" starring Julia Roberts. Julia Roberts' Vivian Ward dons an off-white midi-length button-down dress with poof sleeves — which she accessorizes with a chic black straw hat and a black patent-leather clutch — while shopping on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.
This pair of paintings depict that life is actually a mirror. But the image you see in the mirror is not what everyone else sees. The reflection you see in the mirror each morning is a reversed image of how you appear to the world, and to the camera. What I mean is that others are simply reflecting parts of your own consciousness back to you, giving you an opportunity to really see yourself and ultimately to grow. The qualities you most admire in others are your own and the same goes for those qualities you dislike.
So, then if the world is a mirror of our inner world, any negativity you experience in your world is a reflection of your thought pattern, words and speech.
I hope in these two paintings, you have understood the little secret, the law or let's say the principle of creating a world out of your design, recognizing that our world is a mirror of our inner world and how you can use it to change your life.
Never too late to learn。
Flower hats are a woman's crowning glory. Some simple flowers elevate anything.
Every time I see someone wearing a exceptional hat, I would stop to compliment her. I hope that through my paintings, people will have an appreciation for the beauty, the grace, and the tradition of the hat.
Painting is a healthy way to express your feelings and calm yourself when times are rough. You get to enjoy your finished product and have pride in your commitment to your creative endeavor. Anyone can be an artist, and the joy is universal. I will always love to create, and I invite you to do the same.
