Prague Art Scene With Street Performers At Captivating Prague In Czech Republic
Such a magical city like Prague has a lot to offer for anyone, whatever their cultural interests. This is especially true for anyone that has more than a passing interest for music: from fantastic opera halls with vibrant acoustics to modern halls hosting gigs and performances of contemporary music artists. But besides the established places there is, in Prague, another prominent venue where you can assist to interesting performances: the streets. As you walk trough some narrow alleys in the heart of the Old Town, you will often encounter musicians, mimes and other kind of artists.
Prague established itself as one of the cultural centers in Europe, being a fertile soil for all types of talents. Such a flourishing artistic environment still keeps attracting musicians and performers from all over the world. They offer nice cultural touch to favorite tourist spots and bring life to wonderful city of Prague.
Anyone who has ever stepped foot onto a busy city street knows how hectic and madcap such a location can be. Every day in Prague, there are a great many people hustling and bustling to make meetings and meet friends or to finally get home and have some time to relax. To most people who live in such busy locations, the streets are simply a means of getting from one place to another yet, for some people, the streets offer an opportunity to make a living.
A very unusual artist whose creations are rather bubbly.
It was a woman blowing big bubbles for kids, with one of those bubble wands.
On a fine day, as you wander through the historical Old Town Square, you might find yourself imagining - if only for a fleeting moment - that you are in another city and era. If so, it is because you have caught tunes from the Bridge Band who has brought some New Orleans spice to the heart of Europe for nearly 20 years.
As their name implies, you are most likely to find them performing at Old Town Square or on Charles Bridge, though they don´t play at the places exclusively. The line-up appears to change, though the core players of banjo, tuba, trumpet and a very dexterous washboard player are often there.
And as you pass by the same locations some other day, you'll see another great band performing a cheerful melody.
You will see lots of mimes, whose stories and feelings are expressed by movement of the body and 'human statue' street performers.
Anyone who has ever been to Prague, especially Old Town Square, has undoubtedly seen their fair share of street performers. Street performers describe people who earn their living by entertaining crowds in some way. Jugglers, acrobats, and musicians are popular forms of entertainment that street performers use to amuse people and subsequently draw a crowd (and get the tips that make up a days wages). Yet one of the more elaborate and delightful forms of street performers are known as “Human Statues.”
"Human statues" are street performers who dress in elaborate or ornate costumes and amuse crowds by interacting with them while pretending to be a statue or some other kind of object, like a tree or a mermaid. Most living statues dress in costumes that resemble real-life statues. Other performers will dress in more modern style clothing but paint their entire bodies silver or gold/copper to resemble more modern-day metal statues. Some living statues look so much like actual statues that they surprise passerby’s when they move! Living statues are generally well received among crowds because the costumes usually take a lot of time to create and thus have a very impressive visual effect. Being a living statue is hard work and requires the performers to stand in one (or limited) positions for long periods of time, sometimes in excess of six to eight hours!
Street performers are a common sight in Prague. Anything from a puppeteer to an opera singer to a guitar-player to a juggler to a statue, they are everywhere. They add character and life as well as photo-ops for tourists. Sometimes, they even become iconic.
This woman looked like she was magically floating in the air, standing on some sort of elevated invisible ball at the Prague's famous historic Old Town Square. My jaw dropped as I paused and did a double take. "How did she manage to do it?" I wasn’t alone. Groups of people stopped to take a look, each whispering similar statements to each other. What a fantastic illusion. She certainly had me going for a solid few minutes.
This street performer who appear to be magically lifting herself off the ground using nothing but a stick. However, the trick is actually more than meets the eye and it relates to the clothing that she wear.
If you guessed that it was a platform all along, you'd be correct. The pole itself either directly inserted into the ground, or attached to a stable metal platform that can support the weight of the performer.
But these street performers are just a small sample of what the Prague street art scene has to offer. I leave it to you, whenever you’ll come to visit Prague to let fate and your own curiosity guide you trough the thick web of alleys and be rewarded, surprised and fascinated by the art of the street performers.
