Prague Castle And St Vitus's Cathedral At Captivating Prague In Czech Republic
Prague's skyline is dominated by the vast hilltop complex of Prague Castle, which looks out over the city centre from the west bank of the River Vltava. There's been a royal seat here for over a millennium and it continues to serve as headquarters of the Czech president but the castle is also home to one of Prague's most chief tourist attractions: the Gothic Cathedral of St Vitus. The best thing about the place, though, is that the public are free to roam around the atmospheric courtyards and take in the views from the ramparts from early in the morning until late at night.
St. Vitus’s Cathedral regally over the other buildings of Prague Castle. This fairytale cathedral, the largest in the Czech Republic, was centuries in the building – as a matter of fact, ten centuries. This Gothic cathedral among the most beautiful in Europe, is the spiritual heart of Prague Castle and of the Czech Republic itself. The Cathedral has a long and chequered history. The history of Prague began with the construction of the castle in the 9th century. Its attractive mix of palaces, churches, museums, gardens and galleries gives a fascinating insight into the origins of the city. Once inside, it's difficult not to be impressed by the sheer height of the nave and struck by the modern fixtures and fittings, especially the stained-glass windows.
Prague Castle is a challenging tourist objective but worth the effort. It’s massive and like the Louvre in Paris, easy to get lost amid the splendor. Added to that, the history is unfamiliar to most of us. This stunning architectural achievement, which took centuries to complete, reigns supreme from a hill above the rest of the city. It is also the seat of the city of Prague. The first buildings of the small settlement that grew into the capital of Bohemia were constructed here.
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the Prague Castle is the largest coherent castle complex in the world, with an area of almost 70,000 sqm. A UNESCO World Heritage site, it consists of a large-scale composition of palaces and ecclesiastical buildings of various architectural styles, from Roman-style buildings from the 10th century through Gothic modifications in the 14th century.
The castle guards may look imposing, but they don’t mind if you sidle up for a photograph. The hourly changing of the Gurad at the main gates is a fairly subdued affair, but every day at noon, there's a much more elaborate parade, accompanied by a modern fanfare.
St. Vitus Cathedral is the largest and the most important church in Prague. Apart from religious services the coronations of Czech kings and queens also took place in here. The cathedral is a place of interment of remains of provincial patron saints, sovereigns, noblemen and archbishops. For more than 600 years, the roofs of Prague Castle have been overlooked by the towers of St Vitus Cathedral. The cathedral, whose original name is St Vitus, St Wenceslas and St Adalbert Cathedral, is the biggest and the most important church in the Czech Republic. It’s the seat of the Archbishop of Prague and the place where saints, kings, princes and emperors of Bohemia are buried. It’s one of the best examples of Gothic architecture.
The Neo-Gothic part of the cathedral consists of the main nave and the narrow side aisles, lined with chapels, and the northern wing of the transverse nave. The chapels have stained glass windows. The different conception of its architecture and its magnificent decoration emphasize its importance as the central point of the cathedral as a whole.
You can see the spires of St Vitus’s Cathedral from all around the center of Prague. As you walk into the main area of Prague Castle it is smack bang in front of you and is incredibly impressive.
Its bronze door is decorated with reliefs with scenes from the history of the cathedral.
St Vitus’s is huge and beautiful and is without a doubt the highlight of Prague Castle.
Stained glass window at St Vitus's Cathedral from various periods from the 1400s to the 1900s.
If you have got the stamina, climb the stairs to the top of the Prague Castle tower for some of the best views over the city.
Palace gardens below Prague Castle are a wonderful place to relax and have a look at Lesser Town and Prague’s splendid red roofs are the terraced gardens below the Castle.
While standing on their upper terraces, you can enjoy views of the roofs of the Lesser Quarter dominated by the cupola of St Nicholas’ Church, Petrin Hill, dominant features of the Old Town and the quarters behind it, the shining surface of the River Vltava etc. Planted with a variety of trees, shrubs and numerous other plants, the gardens offer charms which are definitely worth checking out.
A walk around St Vitus's Cathedral takes you back through a thousand years of history. Your visit to Prague won’t be complete without seeing the St Vitus Cathedral. Everyone knows great things take time and the St Vitus's Cathedral is no different - it took more than 600 years to be built.
