Library is a place of silence and concentration. It is almost a sacred place for those, who not only love books, but also draw as much as possible for them. The incredible aura surrounding libraries comes from the silence and concentration that simply is there. But communing with culture in form of hundreds of books of classic writers, contemporary authors and all whose effort was changed from a thought to written word is for some people a very important experience.
Not far from Prague Castle lies the Strahov Monastery, founded in the 12th century. The beautiful Strahov Monastery, which sits on a hill overlooking the city of Prague, was one of my favorite stops when i visited Prague. The Strahov Monastery has stood below the Petrin Hill in the vicinity of Prague Castle for more than 850 years. The monastery's main attraction for visitors today, though, is the Library - one of the most beautiful an extensive in the country. The collection was established at the time of the foundation over 800 years and the two halls on view to the public now house some 130,000 volumes, while a further 700,000 volumes are in storage. They are breathtaking in their beauty.
From the confines of the Strahov Monastery which has had an eventful history, stroll out onto the verdant slopes of Petrin Hill and enjoy panoramic views of the city from the observation tower, or else views of the sky from the observatory. The route begins at Pohorelec, the square at the corner of the Prague Castle District.
Can't help snapping scenic panoramic views of the Prague Castle while strolling up the hill to Strahov Monastery.

While the library’s rooms are roped off, visitors are free to roam through the extensive picture gallery which covers the Gothic through Romanticist periods.
The library gallery’s collection spans from the 14th to the 19th centuries. There are two splendidly decorated halls: the Theological Hall and the Philosophical Hall, they are among the most beautiful spaces of their kind in Europe. The theological and philosophical halls, are over 800 years old and despite being ransacked by many invading armies, is one of the finest in Bohemia. It is now a working monastery and museum. Monks can be seen once again in thoughtful perambulation around the fruit trees of Petrin Hill.
The Philosophical Hall is dominated by a ceiling fresco depicting the human spirit on a quest for Truth. Another dominant feature of this library room are the 50,000 volumes about subjects such as mathematics, poetry and astronomy, all set in exquisitely carved cabinets.

The Philosophical Hall has walnut bookcases so that they almost touch the frescoes on the library's lofty ceiling, while the paintings on the low-ceilinged Theological Hall are framed by wedding-cake styles stuccowork.
The book wall is supported by columns finished with golden elements and a balcony with vases. The ceiling painted is just amazing.
In this library, i was astounded by the ceiling. There are no words for its beauty.
The Theological Hall is decorated with rich stucco work and early 18th century frescoes dealing with themes taken from Psalms and The New Testament, for instance. Flanking the room is a collection of geographical and astronomical globes, some hailing from as early as the 16th century.

A late Gothic, painted statue of St John, the Evangelist situated in the Theological Hall, has the saint's prayer book held in a small pouch.
Some of the books in the Theological Hall are more than 1.000 years old. Who could read in those days?
I finally visited the Strahov Monastery in Prague, which is something i had wanted to do for a long time. I’m really glad i've seen it. The exteriors have been restored to pristine beauty and parts of the interiors are breathtaking. I highly recommend visiting the Strahov Monastery. You can easily do it on the way to the Prague Castle.
