There are many places in Japan with historic streets and preserved architecture, but even among them, the Tondabayashi Jinaimachi in Osaka makes for a rare sight! In accordance with the Cultural Assets Conservation Law, Tondabayashi City in Osaka has designated an area in old Jinaimachi a traditional architecture conservation zone in order to pass down these cultural relics to the next generation and also with the intention to redevelop the town into a unique one which may suit the new eras to come. Appreciating the cultural value of Tondabayashi Jinaimachi and the city's efforts to make the area what it is today, the government designated Jinaimachi an important traditional architecture conservation zone as a national cultural asset. Jinaimachi in Tondabayashi City lies about 45 minutes from central Osaka by train. In a great contrast to the bustling city, time flows very slowly here. The town lies a group of more than 500 machiya, which remain inhabited by people today. Amongst these, the former residence of Sugiyama Family, which is a national designed important cultural asset, is a must-see. The family prospered as asake manufacturer in the 17th century, and their home is preserved to convey the prosperity and culture of the region south of Osaka. It is open to the public. Jinaimachi was built in the middle of the Sengoku Period by the Buddhist sect Jodo-Shinshu. During the Edo Period, the town lost its religious importance and became a town of merchants, with 149 stores operating 51 different kinds of businesses, many of them specialized farming products, cotton and sake brewery. Some of the oldest, wealthiest and best preserved traditional merchant houses can be visited in Tondabayashi, a small city close to Osaka. The beautiful room photographed here belongs to the Old Sugiyama Family Residence, a house once inhabited by an affluent family working in the sake brewing business. The house, considered the best and oldest example of all the merchant houses in the area, was declared Important Cultural Asset in 1983, and the oldest part, around the kitchen, is about 350 years old! The former residence of Sugiyama Family, featuring a stunning four-tiered roof. Further, along the stone pavement of the Jonomonsuji street, one comes upon a mix of temples and merchant homes dating from different time periods, and great views of the whitewashed walls that symbolize the area. The prosperity of the town in the old days attracted many thieves' attention, so the townsmen during then came up with some ingenious security solutions. You can see in today’s photo the "shinobi-gaeshi", a kind of sharp bamboo fences installed…on the top of the building! When you get tired of walking, stop and take a break at the Jinaimachi Koryukan. The spot serves to convey information on the history and culture of Jinaimachi, as well as a rest spot for city residents and visitors. The tranquil exterior of the building has a relaxing affect after a long walk. It was a worthwhile trip to travel back in time to the Old Osaka of the 17th to 20th Centuries where you'll get to see endless white walls on traditional old houses that decorated a historic town!
Comments are closed.
