In Japan there is a kind of Shinto shrine called Enmusubi, dedicated to love and relationships. In Kyoto, perhaps the most famous Enmusubi Shrine is Jishu Shrine 地主神社, located within the grounds of Kiyomizudera Temple 清水寺 (a famous religious complex that is one of the city's most visited sites for tourists and locals). Jishu Shrine was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1994. Jishu Shrine is a shrine dedicated to the deity of love and matchmaking. There's a happy, festive atmosphere throughout the shrine, from all that youthful enthusiasm because most of the participants are teenaged schoolgirls. Being in the name of love, the temple has a unique air of affection and draws both streams of school children and young women in kimonos out to celebrate the mystery of love's fortune, who are pleased to be photographed and found beautiful in the eye of the beholder. Once you pass through the main hall of Kiyomizudera Temple, following the path way you will see Jishu Shrine. Grace of Jishu-jinja Shrine: Statue of Okuninushino-Mikoto (Okuninoshi with Hare of Inaba). He is the main God of the shrine who was a benevolent god who helped a rabbit was in a trouble. And he hoped for happiness of the living things by helping matchmaking. Stalls set up along the shrine's walkways offer amulets, prayer knots, little wooden plaques with pictures and prayers inscribed on them....all asking the god of love to smile on you. That would be Okuninushi no mikoto, whose statue stands at the entrance to the shrine, along with his companion, a rabbit (go figure). He's called the Cupid of Japan and he's been favouring Japanese sweethearts (and others, too, judging by the notes of thanks left at the shrine by lovers from all over the world) for more than a thousand years. Preying place: A drum’s widely resound sound of the shrine removes unhappiness and give us better opportunities for the life. With the wish, beat 3 times the drum, it helps to tell to the god your wish. Doll purification: This is an event which was continued since 8th century. A person writes a problem to a human form paper and blesses it. Then flow or put that substitute figure into water. When the figure dissolves into water, the problem will disappear. Love telling stone: You walk between the two stones, closing your eye. If you could reach to one another, it says your love will realize. The person who reached without any advice, that means the love will realize sooner. The person reached with advices of others, the love will be help the another persons. Hang an 'ema' plaque to pray for love. This is actually a Buddhist statue but it's been at the shrine since a long time ago. Good luck charms from Kyoto Jishu Shrine. One of the best things about Kyoto is that there are thousands of Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples that have been left virtually untouched by war or the ravages of time. Don’t neglect a visit to the Jishu Shrine on its grounds — it’s dedicated to the god of love.
