Copenhagen’s roster of museums and galleries is the envy of cities the world over. Apart from Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (click here to view my blog story on that), Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is my second most favourite art museum in Denmark. Located 5 minutes from the Copenhagen Central Station, the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek presents antique art in an intense interaction between architecture and a large collection of more than 10,000 works of art spanning 6,000 years. It is founded by the famous danish beer founder Carl Jacobsen, he was a collector himself. Eventually, he built this museum and put all of his collection and open it for public. The legacy and influence of the Carlsbergs are visible all over Copenhagen. He also commissioned the famous Little Mermaid statue in the city (I will blog about the Carlsberg Beer brewery and the Little Mermaid in upcoming photo posts.) If ancient art, Greek and Roman sculptures aren’t really your thing, Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek has rooms of French and Danish paintings as well. The imposing and beautiful architecture outside is already a great preview of the art treasures it housed inside. Stroll the hallways lined with marble statues and you can imagine yourself in Ancient Greece, Egypt or Rome. Step inside and discover the museum’s centerpiece which is the Winter Garden filled with high ceilings, palms, a goldfish pond and a variety of other plants. It was like an oasis in the middle of the museum. There were plenty of seats to relax and enjoy this beautiful and tranquil area topped with a large cast iron and glass dome. It is as one has just been transported to a tropical garden somewhere far away. This is surely a wonderful haven from a cold winter Copenhagen day. I was greeted by this striking white sculpture called Water Mother by Danish sculptor, Kai Nielsen. It was a depiction of a woman with 14 naked babies crawling on her. The baby propped up on her arm is supposed to be Venus, the Roman goddess of love, beauty and fertility. In the beautiful and spacious Winter Garden, you can take a breather and refresh yourself at Café Picnic where you can enjoy a piece of cake, a light lunch, or maybe just a coffee in the peaceful surroundings. The gallery also has a small bookshop and souvenir shop. I can imagine how much this haven injects some relief and joy during those cold winter months in Copenhagen. I love how they set up this rotunda alongside the café and how there was so much light coming in here. As I started exploring, it wasn’t just the impressive collection of marble statues that were amazing but the floors, walls and ceiling art that surrounded them. The number of white marble sculptures here was astounding. They ranged in many different subjects. There were so many wonderful sculptures here but these were a few of my favorites. It almost felt like I was visiting a palace or one of those very ornate European churches instead of a museum. Clearly, Mr. Carl Jacobsen spared no expense with these buildings to house his beloved collection and treasures. I like that many of the sculptures were well marked with wordings in both Danish and English. These buildings were constructed well to allow a lot of light to come into the rooms to clearly see the details of the sculptures Overall, the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is a remarkable and impressive museum with rich collection of sculptures and galleries. It is without doubt one of the must-visit museums for anyone who loves classical art.
Copenhagen's fantastic art scene has something for everyone: Heaps of modern art, creative design spaces to challenge the norms, and stunning buildings that house works by some of the biggest names in art. No matter what your interest is, Copenhagen has a museum for you, from the antiques to modern design via every possible stop in between.
